Spotted Dick Tastes Good!!

Hmm! Yummy! [licking my fingers]

So, Guy (my British beau), reminded me that Spotted Dick is a popular UK dessert and not only that, but I’ve eaten it and enjoyed it while there. I have apparently tasted and liked this Spotted Dick (surely you are not surprised?) and what’s up with the British and their Freudian food names, “Bangers and Mash,” (mashed potatoes & a long sausage), Fish & Chips (I’ll leave that one to your imagination), “Toad in the Hole” (there’s no toad involved in this, its gravy, mashed potatoes, sausages and baked bread).

Here is some background on Spotted Dick:

Spotted dick is a steamed suet pudding containing dried fruit (usually currants) commonly served with custard. Spotted refers to the dried fruit (which resemble spots) and dick may be a contraction or corruption of the word pudding (from the last syllable) or possibly a corruption of the word dough[1] or dog, as “spotted dog” is another name for the same dish with the use of plums rather than currants. Another explanation offered for the word “dick” is that it comes from the German word for “thick” or dick.

Okay so Spotted Dick I’ll say requires an acquired taste just as its name takes some getting used to. But be adventurous and try it, you may find that you enjoy some Spotted Dick. Fellas, you might not want to ever admit this!
